What is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy is an age-appropriate method of child-centred therapeutic support which allows children to express feelings, thoughts and experiences that they may not be able to articulate. Play is regarded as the child's natural language, providing a medium through which they can express thoughts and emotions that are subconscious or conscious.

Our approach uses play-based therapy (including sand play therapy) to allow children to explore issues in their own time, at their own pace, in a safe and supportive environment.

Who is Play Therapy for?

Our play-based therapist typically works with Adelaide children aged 3-10 years (and beyond, as appropriate). Play Therapy can provide extra support with emotional, behavioural or social-developmental challenges. It can be particularly beneficial for children living with:

  • Anxiety, worry or stress

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may find it easier to express themselves through play rather than words

  • Grief and loss

  • Bullying, low confidence and self-esteem

  • Social anxiety

  • Perfectionism

  • Behavioural concerns

Children’s play therapy can be funded as NDIS play therapy and therapeutic supports where one’s plan and goals allow for it.

How Play Therapy can help?

Play-based therapy for children provides a safe, nurturing and non-clinical space where children feel heard and valued to explore their inner world —whether past or current, conscious or unconscious, even if they’re unable to articulate concerns verbally. Kids play therapy offers:

  • Creative play, role-play and sand play therapy

  • Builds social and emotional skills

  • Builds self-regulation, resilience and confidence by gently guiding children’s natural expression

  • Facilitates connection between therapist, child and family so therapeutic progress is meaningful and tailored.

Play Therapy may Integrate into broader support plans for NDIS participants — we ensure a collaborative approach is taken by our play therapist integrating interventions with school, home and NDIS goals.
