What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy—sometimes called aquatic therapy—is a water-based form of therapy that uses the natural properties of warm water to support movement, strength, flexibility, and relaxation.
In a hydrotherapy pool, the water’s buoyancy reduces stress on the body, making it easier and safer to move. The gentle resistance of water also builds strength and endurance while helping children experience success and confidence in their physical abilities.

At Resilient Kidz, our Adelaide hydrotherapy sessions take place in a warm, welcoming environment designed for children and young people. Sessions feel playful and engaging while still being carefully structured to support therapeutic goals. We focus on meaningful movement—helping each participant do things in the water that may feel difficult on land.

Who is Hydrotherapy for?

Hydrotherapy is ideal for children, adolescents, and young adults with physical, neurological, or sensory needs who may benefit from movement and muscle support in water.
It can be especially helpful for those living with:

  • Cerebral Palsy (CP) or other neuromotor conditions where buoyancy supports easier movement.

  • Musculoskeletal or joint conditions, such as juvenile arthritis, where hydrotherapy exercises reduce pain and stiffness.

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or sensory processing challenges, where the water provides calming sensory input.

  • Developmental delay, Down syndrome, or muscular dystrophy, supporting gentle strength, coordination, and confidence.

  • Anxiety or fear of movement, where a pool setting can provide safety, fun, and success through water-based play.

Hydrotherapy can also benefit children who struggle with traditional land-based therapy or who need a change of environment to re-engage with therapy goals.

How can Hydrotherapy help?

Our hydrotherapy exercises and sessions are designed by qualified therapists who understand paediatric development, sensory needs, and physical rehabilitation.
In the pool, children can:

  • Build strength and coordination through water resistance.

  • Improve balance and flexibility with reduced joint strain.

  • Develop confidence and independence as they explore safe movement in a supportive environment.

  • Enhance sensory regulation and body awareness, helping children feel calm and in control.

  • Enjoy therapy through play, connection, and fun, rather than feeling like it’s “just exercise.”

Hydrotherapy also supports rehabilitation following injury, surgery, or changes in mobility, helping maintain fitness and range of motion without putting stress on growing bodies.
